In Memory of Dr. Bill MacEachern, Class of 5T8

by Dr. Peter Wyshynski, Class of 6T1, with files from Knox College and the family’s memorial

Dr. William Neil MacEACHERN, at age 89, on March 24, 2022, in Waterloo, Ontario

I knew Bill through mutual friends, parties, dinners, skiing, and from referring patients to each other.

After graduating from U of T, first in Pharmacy in 1954, then in Medicine in 1958, Bill did an internship at Toronto General Hospital. Then he moved to Hanover, New Hampshire, where he completed a dermatology residency at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in 1963. Bill was very proud of his connection to Dartmouth College, returning faithfully to all of the reunions, and he kept up his New Hampshire medical licence even though he never returned to practise there.

The next year, 1964, Bill opened a dermatology practice in Kitchener, Ontario, and practised for 53 years. I remember visiting him in his first office at 307A½ Lancaster St. when I moved and started a practice in Kitchener-Waterloo in 1970.

It was no surprise to me that Bill was recognized by his peers as “Practitioner of the Year” in 1984 because everyone agreed that he was an exceptionally competent and knowledgeable dermatologist as well as a “really nice guy.” He also served as President of the Canadian Dermatology Association in 1989.

Bill loved to ski, a passion that along with his joviality and friendliness made him fun to be with both on the hill and après ski. For over 25 years, a highlight of his weekends was his Sunday morning ski class with his fellow ROGUES (Retired Old Guys Undertaking Extreme Skiing).

He fully retired from medicine in 2017.

The passing of Dr. William MacEachern has left a sad vacancy in the community.
