The MAA presents awards to recognize clinical and academic excellence for both students and Faculty.

MAA Student Award recipients are selected by the Faculty of Medicine's Undergraduate Awards Committee.

Faculty Awards recipients are selected by 2nd-year and 4th-year medical students.

Student Awards

Dr. Kelly Gollish 5T7 Memorial Award
Presented annually to a medical student in either the third or fourth year who has demonstrated an interest in the field of Ophthalmology through clinical or research participation.

Dr. John Hepburn Award
Established by the estate of Dr. Ruben D. Grant (2T8) in honour of Dr. John Hepburn (2T1), a cardiologist and teacher at the U of T. This award is made on the recommendation of the Chairman of the Department of Physiology to assist in cardiovascular research.

Dr. Delbert S. Hoare Award
Presented to a graduating student who has made outstanding contributions to undergraduate medical education, or who has fostered the supportive role of the MAA with medical undergraduates of the U of T.

Dr. Ruth Kurdyak Memorial MAA Medical student assistance award
The award, donated by Dr. Victor Kurdyak (6T0) in memory of his wife, Dr. Ruth Kurdyak (6T0), and matched by the university, will be awarded annually to students with financial need.

Robert P. Orange Memorial Prize
Established by classmates of the late Dr. Orange (6T5). This award is presented annually to a student in the fourth year who has demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and leadership, and a commitment to extracurricular activities with the Faculty of Medicine and the University.

MAA Proficiency Scholarships
Presented annually in recognition of general proficiency in year four of the undergraduate medical program.

Samuel J. Streight Award
Presented annually in recognition of high academic standing in Internal Medicine.

The Weber/Nimon Prize in Neurology
Created in 1999 to honour the memory of Sol and Rose Weber and Joseph and Esther Nimon by their grateful children, the late Dr. B.M. Weber (Class of 1963) and Wendy Weber, and is awarded annually at the MAA Convocation Banquet to a student in any medical year who demonstrates a special interest in Neurology.

Dr. Carl (Class of 3T6) Witus Award in Paediatrics
Established in 1990 is awarded to a third-year student with high standing and interest in paediatrics. Recommendations will be received from the Department of Paediatrics.

Drs. Carl (3T6) and Ann Witus Admission Awards
Established in 1990, these are awarded to 10 first-year students in recognition of high academic standing during premedical studies.

5T7 Memorial Dr. Janice Huffman Medical Alumni Award in Radiology
Established in 2006 by 5T7 class members and friends, awarded to a student in the final year of the Doctor of Medicine program who has excelled in and will be specializing in diagnostic or therapeutic radiology.

Dr. S. Nimu Ganguli and Family Medical Alumni Award in Diagnostic Medical Imaging
Established in 2014, awarded for excellence in the field of Diagnostic Medical Imaging.

Barbara M. Hardy Memorial MAA Award
Established in 2010 in memory of Dr Bill Harris' sister Barbara Hardy; awarded annually to a graduating medical student who has excelled in and will be specializing in General Surgery.

Harris Family MAA Award in Oncology
Established in 200 by Dr. Bill (5T8) and Penny Harris and family; awarded to a graduating medical student who has excelled in and will be specializing in oncology.

Dr. Isaac (Jack) Markens 4T8 Medical Alumni Award
for general proficiency in Year 4 of the undergraduate medical program

MAA Proficiency Award
for general proficiency in Year 4 of the undergraduate medical program

Faculty Awards

Class of 8T9 Award
Established by the Class of 1989 to recognize faculty members for their outstanding contribution to the undergraduate experience.

Dr. Mary Hollington Teaching Awards
Established from a gift made by Dr. Mary Hollington (4T4) to the MAA. One award is given to a Faculty member in each Academy who has taught with distinction during the Foundations portion of the curriculum. The other award is presented to a teacher in each Academy who has demonstrated excellence in teaching during clerkship. 

Selected by 4th year students, one per academy

David Eberle Memorial Alumni Award
Established by medical graduates of the class of 9T2. This award is presented to a staff member in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the undergraduate medical experience.

Dean Chute Silver Shovel Award
Established by the medical graduating class of 5T4 and reestablished in 1973 as the Chute award in honour of Dean Chute. This award aims to recognize excellent lecturing in the clinical years of the MD program.
